(Column) All About Ashville

There is a line in an Alfred Tennyson poem about a young man’s fancy turning to love in Spring. Nowadays, men and women of all ages think about Spring break. My prayers are with those of you who have teenagers.

Those who have younger children may be wondering “what am I going to do with my kids?”

The St Clair County arena and event center is hosting an athletic camp March 24 and 25 for kids in grades 2nd through 8th. It does not concentrate on any particular sport. There will be mini combine testing, with concentration on speed agility and sports nutrition.

The classes are from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.  The cost is $75. Register online at stclairco.recdesk.com. For more information, call 205-629-2861.

We all know the benefits team sports have on kids. More and more, people are choosing to homeschool their children. In Ashville, there are community sports. There is also another option for these non-traditional students.

The Lighthouse Warriors is a Christian organization dedicated to providing football and cheerleading in grades 7 through 12. They “prepare kids to be warriors on and off the field.”

They are having a meeting Saturday, March 1, at 10 a m. at New Life ministries. For questions about football, call coach J.J. Duarte at 205-706-6090. For cheerleading, call Mandy Smith at 205-997-0098.

The Little Art Tree is still accepting students for the month beginning Friday, Feb. 28. For information call 205-405-5820.

Also, Neely Henry Lake is looking for volunteers to help build the spring habitat March 5, at 9 a.m. Check out their post on the “What’s Happening in Ashville” page.
