(Our view) Be alert to avert a tragedy

We need to be alert when behind the wheel at all times, but never so much as when our children are involved.

A recent video highlighting the importance of this is now circulating in North Alabama. Although the video originated in Cullman, it’s an eye-opener for us all. If not for the diligence and experience of this school bus driver, the situation very likely could have had a tragic end. You can watch that video here: https://cullmantimes.com/2025/02/06/video-ccboe-reminds-drivers-to-stop-for-school-buses/.

For the record
In Alabama, drivers must stop when a school bus is stopped with its red flashing lights on, unless they are on a divided highway with multiple lanes. Drivers must remain stopped until the bus moves again.

And an aside, the rules also apply to church buses, according to Alabama law.

When to stop
— Two-lane roads: All traffic from both directions must stop.
— Four-lane roads without a median: All traffic from both directions must stop.
— Four-lane or more divided highways with a median: Only traffic following the bus must stop.
— Loading zones: Drivers don’t need to stop if the bus is stopped in a loading zone where pedestrians aren’t allowed to cross.

Failure to comply with these rules result in progressive penalties.

Penalties (from Alabama Code Title 32)
1, Upon first conviction, a person violating subsection (a) shall be punished by a fine of not less than one hundred fifty dollars ($150) nor more than three hundred dollars ($300).

2, On a second conviction, a person convicted of violating subsection (a) shall be punished by a fine of not less than three hundred dollars ($300) nor more than five hundred dollars ($500) and shall complete at least 100 hours of community service. In addition, the Director of the Department of Public Safety shall suspend the driving privileges or driver’s license of the person convicted for a period of 30 days.

3. On a third conviction, a person convicted of violating subsection (a) shall be punished by a fine of not less than five hundred dollars ($500) nor more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) and shall complete at least 200 hours of community service. In addition, the Director of the Department of Public Safety shall suspend the driving privileges or driver’s license of the person convicted for a period of 90 days.

4. On a fourth or subsequent conviction, a person convicted of violating subsection (a) shall be guilty of a Class C felony and punished by a fine of not less than one thousand dollars ($1,000) nor more than three thousand dollars ($3,000). In addition to the other penalties authorized, the Director of the Department of Public Safety shall revoke the driving privileges or driver’s license of the person convicted for a period of one year.

Stay alert and be safe when you’re on the road, St. Clair County — to make sure those around you stay the same way.
