(Column) All About Ashville

One of the best things about in Ashville is the events.  There is Sweets on the Square. Fireworks blaze in the sky over the city on Independence Day. Everyone can count on Sheryl Baird for some amazing displays on every holiday

This Saturday is the biggest one of the year.

Christmas on the Square, 29 Court Street East, begins at noon offers fun for all ages. Vendors are perfect for last minute Christmas shoppers. The wares are often handmade and unique. These are the best kind of gifts. Food will be necessary to fuel the body for a long day of fun.

Pictures with Santa begin at 1 p.m., fun for kids and lifelong mementos for parents.  There will be music, face painting, balloon twisting, inflatables and inflatable for the kids. Everyone can enjoy the music and square dancing. The parade begins at 7 p.m. Pictures with Santa will be inside Spencer’s Apparel. Beverly Burnett from Mi-Mi’s things will be at The Little Art Tree selling crochet and quilted items.

Events like these may be one of the reasons there is such a strong sense of community in this city. There is much evidence to support the fact that attending or even discussing these events offer residents the chance to bond and build relationships.

There are also economic benefits. Residents spend money in Ashville. Events like these attract members from other communities as well. They give local businesses the opportunity to showcase for free.

It has even been suggested events boost self esteem by making residents feel like valued members of the community, a part of something bigger than themselves. The planning and anticipation boosts morale thereby lowering stress … a fancy way to say they are fun.
