Colts Notebook: Kelly says no early extension in works

WESTFIELD – Ryan Kelly is not a man to mince words.
So when the Indianapolis Colts center was asked a direct question about his hopes for a contract extension as he reported to Grand Park Sports Campus for training camp Wednesday, he provided a direct answer.
“From our standpoint, it’s the Colts have basically made it pretty clear that they don’t want to do an early extension,” Kelly said. “So it is what it is.”
The 31-year-old has been the anchor of Indianapolis’ revived offensive line and is entering his ninth season as a team leader.
He’s a member of the NFL Players Association’s executive committee and as well respected as any man inside the Colts’ locker room.
Kelly also is one of the toughest men in the locker room, but he has had a recent history of injuries — including several concussions — that might cause some hesitation on the organization’s part.
General manager Chris Ballard’s stance is talks can resume when the time is right.
“Well, I don’t talk about contracts, and every case is different,” Ballard said. “I think one thing we’ve proven since we’ve been here is we’re really loyal to players that have been good players. I think that’ll work itself out over time. But I’m not going to talk about contract stuff.”
Kelly is a four-time Pro Bowler with 111 career starts and, along with long snapper Luke Rhodes, is the longest tenured player on the roster.
SACK SUMMIT
Rookie Laiatu Latu had a busy summer in California.
His regular training group in Los Angeles included teammates Dayo Odeyingbo, Kwity Paye, Samson Ebukam and Adetomiwa Adebawore as well as Kenny Clark of the Green Bay Packers, Rasheem Green – most recently with the Chicago Bears – and Khalil Mack of the Los Angeles Chargers.
“Really just learning off of them and how to better myself and really seeing what success looks like,” Latu said. “So the whole offseason was great for me.”
The highlight, however, might have been a two-day stay in Las Vegas for the “Sack Summit.”
Among the veterans Latu was able to talk shop and break down film with were three-time All-Pro Von Miller of the Buffalo Bills and eight-time Pro Bowler Cam Jordan of the New Orleans Saints.
“The way they carry themselves and talk about the game, you know they’re fully dealt into the game, fully committed, and I am learning more about myself just watching them and listening to them, too,” Latu said. “So I can’t wait to bring that to training camp.”
ROSTER MOVES
The Colts signed free agent wide receiver Laquon Treadwell and waived wide receiver Xavier White on the eve of the first training camp practice.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Treadwell has 111 catches for 1,242 yards and five touchdowns in 81 career games since being drafted with the 23rd overall pick by the Minnesota Vikings in 2016.
The Colts will be the sixth franchise for the 29-year-old, who likely will compete for a depth spot alongside Ashton Dulin.
Indianapolis also placed defensive tackle Raekwon Davis on the non-football illness list and cornerback Chris Lammons on the physically unable to perform list prior to the start of training camp.
NEXT PRACTICE
Camp kicks off with a practice from 10 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
Colts City will be open from 9 a.m. to noon.
