Leeds is gearing up for an exhilarating journey through time into the history of the city for the Saturday, April 13, Downtown Walking Tour. Prepare to be transported back to the 1940s as you stroll through downtown Leeds, encountering more than 75 reenactors, for an immersive experience with 30 stops along the route, each unveiling a different facet of Leeds’ past.
More than 150 volunteers have crafted an experience from extensive historical research using authentic props. Meet librarian Miss Winnie, portrayed by Becky King, at H. Evans Dry Goods. Hear stories about the old Sinclair Filling Station, Lovell’s Beauty Shop, Coopers, Atlanta and Pacific Tea Company, Clayton Clinic, Power’s Café, Nelson’s Sandwich Shop, Ben Franklin Stores, Leeds Theatre and so much more.
The Old Time Hymn Sing at Mosaic Church will feature a congregational singing with classics like “The Old Rugged Cross” and “Amazing Grace.”
Guests can then venture to the historic train depot for a railroad adventure hosted by the Mid-South Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society. Receive a pretend train ticket for a pretend train ride and experience train demonstrations, telegraph displays and hear stories of the unsung heroes of the rails.
The event will conclude with the Leeds High School Greenwave Jazz Ensemble performing melodies of the 1940s.
