After all the events occurring this weekend that were mentioned in last week’s column it’s hard to believe one was left out. But it was. And this event was like no other.

Ashville Parks and Recreation Department is holding a Halloween celebration on Oct. 31. Unlike the rest, this will be held in the daytime. It begins at 9:30 a.m. There will be games, food, prizes and hayrides. Costumes are not required, but encouraged. Line dancing begins at 10:30 a.m.

The Ashville High School football team has had a rough season. However, there are two home games left. Please be there to support the dogs. Students younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult. There will be no passes out of the stadium during game time. 

The Ashville High School future farmers of America is raising funds by selling fruit. Reach out to a member of the FFA or stop by the school to place your order. Go to floridafruitstore.com/ASHFFA for details about which fruits the quantity and the prices.

There are more than 44,000 working farms in Alabama, according to the Alabama Farmers Federation. About 14% of Alabama’s workforce is employed in agriculture, according to a study released by the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Farming is not an easy way of life. Crops are subjected to the whims of the weather, infestation of poisonous insects and animals such as deer that raid the crops. There is a beauty and nobility of living off the land as well as an independence.

Organizations like FFA seek to live and preserve this way of life. They also protect the environment. By using land to grow crops and generate income, they preserve it. 

The deadline to order fruit is Nov. 13. The approximate delivery date is between Dec. 4 and Dec. 13. Please purchase and help these youngsters.
