The McCain Memorial Library has officially opened with a ribbon cutting hosted by the City of Ashville.
Before the ribbon cutting Mayor Derrick Mostella spoke to guests about how thankful he was for all the help and support given to get the library in its new location.
“Too often we expect credit, and we expect a pat on the back for doing things that we should be doing. I’m not looking for any attaboys, I certainly didn’t do this alone,” said Mostella
He said he was proud of the effort residents and city employees put into the project.
“I hope it’s just the beginning of the things we’ll be able to do here,” said Mostella.
Library Director Paula Ballard was in charge of the move from the beginning of the process last April.
“Paula from the very start, this was her vision. If anybody deserves the credit, it would be her and her board. I’m thankful for your vision and the work you put into this,” said Mostella.
The library was largely funded by David and Louisa McCain, who contributed donations toward the move.
David lived here his entire childhood until college. He is a part of the fourth generation of McCains to live in Ashville. He said his family has always been about giving back to the community.
“We’re just really pleased to do it in honor of our family,” said McCain.
Through owning businesses and living in Ashville, he said his family is rooted deeply in the area, which is why the library became a passion project for him and his wife Louisa.
“This town is a big part of my life,” said David.
Louisa said she would like to thank everyone who collaborated with her and her husband. She said the library is an important project to her because she knows when people get ready to move, access to a good public library is one of the first things considered.
