ASHVILLE — At the Ashville City Council meeting on Monday the council discussed several improvement projects in progress such as Robinson Plaza, the city park and project featuring the Alabama Communities of Excellence recommendations.
Robison Plaza is awaiting approval from a donor to purchase a bench. The cost estimate has already been done.
The city began working with the ACE program in February after being accepted at the end of 2021. A team from the program came into the city to do an assessment in February, the council is still waiting on results and advice from that visit.
The ACE program doesn’t fund any goals set in place, but they do help cities secure grants to make plans happen. The ACE program offers a systematic approach and tools to growing cities by focusing on what makes each city unique through their assets and resources.
Results from the program were supposed to be received at the end of March, but the council is having to wait a little longer due to unknown reasons.
The council discussed the possibility of city park upgrades, but still need to decide exactly how to use the Community Foundation Grant in order to begin improvements.
The opening of the new McCain Memorial Public Library, formerly the Ashville Public Library, was celebrated as well. An official grand opening event will take place on April 19, 3 p.m.-6 p.m. The ribbon cutting will take place at 3 p.m.
The roof of the fire station is going to be replaced, but the council is waiting for the bidding process to be complete before making any new plans.
A city concession stand will also need a new roof after taking damage from wind in the storm last week. An insurance claim has been filed and the street department placed a tarp over it to protect it from rain temporarily.
