Last week’s team of the week, the East Central Patriots won last Friday night in a big way 52-20 at Trinity Christian. They improved their season record to 2 – 1.
This week’s team of the week is The Leeds Green Wave. Leeds Green Wave football has a long standing tradition of winning. During a ten year stretch from 2006 to 2015 Leeds played in five State Championship games winning four of them. That was under then coach Keith Etherege. Two years later, under Head Coach Jerry Hood, the Green Wave has been back in the playoffs on a consistent basis.
Last week the Green Wave had to come from behind on the road against a touch Lincoln Golden Bear team. Trailing 13 – 6 Jarrod Latta throws a 10 yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 13. Tanner Chambers had two huge interceptions for the Green Wave defense. Latta had 115 yards passing, and Damorion Felder had 3 receptions for 64 yards averaging 21.3 yards per catch.
This week’s player of the game and the feature player of the week for the Green Wave goes to bell cow running back Rametrius Yelvertson. The Leeds running back had 17 carries for 126 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 7.4 yards per carry. Leeds got the come from behind win 19 – 13 over the Lincoln Golden Bears.
The Green Wave will host rival Moody tomorrow night at Homer Smiles Field. Last season’s meeting at Bill Morris was all Leeds. Seven Moody turnovers led to a 55 – 20 blowout win for the Green Wave over their rivals. This series dates back to 1983, but not with very many meetings. The lone victory for the Blue Devils in this series was a 7 – 6 win at Homer Smiles on October 29, 2009. Leeds also lost to rival St Clair that season.
This season’s game is the biggest one in this series so far. Moody enters the game 3 – 0 for the first time since the 90’s with wins over Elmore County, John Carroll and Hayden. Leeds is also 3 – 0 with wins over Sylacauga, Pell City and Lincoln. This should be a fun game for these two rivals. Kickoff will be at 7 pm and good old Homer Smiles field.
