A man driving a stolen vehicle died after jumping into the river while attempting to elude capture Tuesday night.

According to Pell City Police Chief Paul Irwin, on June 22 at 8:45pm, Pell City officers attempted to stop a stolen vehicle in Pell City. The driver fled east on I-20 east until he stopped on the interstate shoulder and fled over a guardrail.

The man, who authorities have not yet identified, jumped in the Coosa River in an attempt to flee from the police. Police, firefighters and a dive team responded, but Irwin said the man’s body was recovered a short time later, 

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is handling the investigation.
