With the corona virus moving students to become distant online learners, that hasn’t stopped several students in St. Clair County from going above and beyond in their students.

Students from the University of Alabama at Birmingham were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Ashley Lee and Heather Martinez of Odenville, Lily Bice and Abbie Knight of Springville are among approximately 30,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.

Douglas Layton of Ashville was among 40 student at Gadsden State Community College to be inducted into The National Technical Honor Society. The organization is a leader in providing recognition for excellence in career and technical education, creating significant occupational opportunities for America’s top workforce education students, access to an employment database maintained by the organization and letters of recommendation to gain employment, scholarships and college admission.

The Honors Committee at Gadsden State Community College recognized Angel Wiggins of Moody and Samantha Spelce of Steele Students of Distinction. Wiggins and Spelce were among 64 students to be recognized. Students are nominated and selected by the faculty and staff of the College. Students must have a 3.5 minimum GPA, be eligible to graduate, exhibit service to the college, demonstrate leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership in community-related activities and the potential for future achievement. 

The Honors Committee at Gadsden State Community College recognized 25 students as Rising Scholars. Among those students were Alexandra Booker and Elisabeth Lee of Springville. Students must have a 3.5 minimum GPA, complete 30-53 credit hours by the end of the spring semester and exhibit service to the college, demonstrate leadership in academic and extracurricular activities, demonstrate leadership in community and community by participating in at least one extracurricular activity. 

Tameron Williams of Pell City was inducted into the Anderson Society at the University of Alabama. The Anderson Society is a leadership honorary that recognizes students who have made significant contributions to the University of Alabama. Twenty-four students are accepted each year, and seven honorary memberships are awarded to faculty and graduating seniors.
