433 rushing yards leads Moody to victory

Connor Rush and Terrence Moore combined for 433 yards rushing and three touchdowns in Moody’s 21 – 7 region win over St. Clair County. Moody now has their eyes set on a trip down highway 280 to face off against the Sylacauga Aggies.

The Saints got the ball first to open the game and their backfield got a great dose of defensive plays from Moody’s Christian Archer and Joel McCormick. Archer had two tackles for loss and a sack and McCormick had a sack. The Saints drive was kept alive thanks to a fumble on a punt and recovery by the Saints. Facing 1 and 15 at their own 36, Joshua Shruggs connected with Joshua Ruff for a 64 yard score. The extra point was good and St. Clair led 7 – 0.

Moody started the second quarter facing second and 7 at the Saints 44 yard line. Connor Rush faked the hand off, stepped in the hole made by the line and took it 44 yards to the house. Christian Sierra’s extra point was good and the game was tied at 7.

Joel McCormick once again helped to quiet the Saints offence and they had to punt the football away. Moody got the ball at the Saints’ 48 yard line. On the drive’s first play Rush handed off to Terrence Moore and he broke free for a 48 yard score. With Sierra’s extra point Moody now led 14 – 7. Later in the second quarter Christian Archer picked off a pass for the team’s first interception of the season and returned it 30 yards to the Saints’ 21 yard line. The Saints’ defense held thanks to an interception in the end zone. The score remained 14 – 7 Moody at halftime.

The Saints surprised the Blue Devils with an onside kick to open the second half. The surprise worked as the Saints recovered the football at the Moody 44 yard line. The Saints later faced third and long during the drive. Their screen play attempt was blown up by Christian Archer for the Blue Devils, forcing a punt. The Saints pinned the Blue Devils at their own 12 yard line. On Moody’s first play of the second half, Connor Rush again faked the hand off and exploded through the hole opened by the offensive line and showed another gear, racing 88 yards for a score. The extra point was good. Moody stretched their lead to 21 – 7 after three quarters.

The two teams exchanged possessions throughout the fourth quarter. Alijah Daniel recovered a fumble late in the fourth and Moody closed out the game and won 21 – 7.

Senior quarterback Connor Rush led the offensive attack for the Blue Devils with 246 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Terrence Moore followed with 187 yards and a touchdown for a total of 433 yards.

Joel McCormick led the defense with 9 tackles, 2 for loss, 3 sacks and 4 hurries. Aiden Calvert followed with 7 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 hurry. Mason Shockley had 6 tackles, 1 for loss and 1 sack. Christian Archer finished with 7 tackles, 2 for loss and 1 interception.

Moody will travel to Sylacauga to take on the Aggies tomorrow night in Region Play. The Aggies edged out the Blue Devils 21 – 14 last season. Moody returns home next week for a 2 game home stand. The Blue Devils host Central Clay County next Friday night and will celebrate Homecoming on Sept. 28. Kickoff for tomorrow night’s game at Sylacauga is at 7:30 p.m.
