The days are longer and warmer. Those of us who have been under the “weather” with cabin fever after the long winter are ready to recover in long awaited sunshine of Spring.

Big Canoe Creek is an ideal place to commune with Mother Nature now that she has grown kinder. This long, lovely creek is located on the side of Highway 231 at the bridges just outside Ashville city limits and runs through the lush greenery and woodlands of the area.

Visitors can bring their own kayaks or canoes. Or they can rent a kayak from Yak tha Creek, the family owned business that operates tours and boat rentals.

“It is obvious why this family owned business is successful,” said one online reviewer. “They are a pleasure to deal with.”

The self-guided tours are not limited to families. Large groups and fisherman are welcome. According to their website, yakthacreek.com, they are proud to be part of birthdays, anniversaries and first dates. There are no time limits on the self-guided tours. So visitors can get vigorous exercise with traditional kayaking, find a spot where the fish are biting or take a long, leisurely roll down the waterway: ideal for those first dates!

Saturday, April 6 at 9 a.m., the creek will be ready and waiting to welcome anyone wishing to spend a day on the water. Operating hours are Saturdays from 9 a.m to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. They are open during the week by appointment. For those with their own kayaks or canoes, the cost is $5. Single kayaks rent for $30 for the day.

Tours are three, five and seven miles. Group rates apply to any party over five. Discounted rates are given to the military, police, firefighters, nurses and teachers.

To reserve a kayak, something the people at Yak tha Creek suggest, or other questions, call 205-612-2292 or visit their website at yakthacreek.com to see photos and reviews.
