The Pell City Board of Education (BOE) decided unanimously on all five items for the 2018-2019 school year at their regular meeting Tuesday night.
Here’s what you can expect this school year.
Saturday school will be held at Pell City High School. The high school offers the Grade/Credit Recovery Program too for students from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Other notable approvals from the Pell City BOE meeting: the FY 2018 Capital Plan, the Athletic Department and Miscellaneous Salary Supplements, and the approval of Accounts Payable for July in the amount of $611,566.91.
The Pell City BOE hired four new teachers, however the Curriculum Coordinator at the Central Office, Dr. Kimberly T. Williams, resigned due to moving out of the area.
“She is one of the best teachers in the country,” said Pell City Schools Superintendent Dr. Michael Barber. “She will be greatly missed.”
Dr. Williams was the leader in the partnership between the high school and business and industry, such as the partnership with Garrison Steel. Pell City High School trade students receive welding instruction at Garrison Steel. The board has been stressing math, particularly when students use math in real life scenarios like welding.
Coosa Valley Elementary will open a new preschool the day after Labor Day. Plus they are getting two new classrooms for the kindergarteners. Jennifer Hannah, principal of Coosa Valley Elementary School, said that Coosa Valley is really off to a great start. They had a superhero themed decoration on Meet the Teacher Day. And they had a “back to school bus” day where kindergarten teachers rode the bus through neighborhoods and back roads, interacting with kids and parents throughout the communities of Pell City.
Lastly, the Pell City School System went up 165 students since last year. The board will continue to promote on radios and stay active within the Pell City communities.
