Head Coach: Derrick Sewell

After two consecutive playoff berths, Ragland said goodbye to coach Brian Alread who moved on to Glencoe. In steps new Ragland head football coach Derrick Sewell, who will coach in one of the most competitive regions in 1A football.

Sewell does inherit some very good talent returning for this season. Two-way player Ladarious Spikes stands out as one of the best free safeties in the region, and has spent the offseason putting on weight to roll down and play some linebacker. The best hands and strongest motor on the Purple Devils squad probably belongs to senior Jalen Byers, who should lead the team in receptions and interceptions this year.

One of the most intriguing stories of this upcoming season will be the performance of junior quarterback Elijah Ball. If you were to find a quarterback out of central casting, you would find Ball – a lean, rangy and athletic six-footer with great instincts and escapability. Ball is surrounded by athletic kids, and his success in executing Sewell’s playbook will be key in how well the Purple Devils start their 2018 campaign.
