Head Coach: Mike Holliday
Victory Christian School Head Coach Mike Holliday enters his second year following up an impressive 5-5 outing with his eye on a spot in the playoffs for 2018 and a group of young men he believes has what it takes to get there.
“We like to think of football as being an opportunity to take a bunch of good guys and make a great football team, and to make great, Godly men when they become older.”
“I feel that our defensive line is going to be good for us this year.” Holliday went on to say that it is unfortunate that the media does not give linemen their proper due, since it is on the line that games are won and lost.
The Lions’ coach emphasized player execution at practice and on game night. “There’s plenty of schemes out there, plenty of X’s and O’s,” Holliday said. “The key in being successful is taking those schemes and executing them properly.”
Holliday will rely on a couple of big linemen to control that line of scrimmage. Returning after being selected in 2017 as an All-Region star is nose-guard Cage Jackson, joined by fellow lineman Griffin Staples, who together will provide a strong one-two punch in the trenches.
As for skill players, Holliday seemed very confident with returning starter Aaron Jernigan, who plays wide receiver and cornerback. Joining Jernigan will be a newcomer in senior Noah Holliday, who will be balancing duties at tight end and safety.
Despite the recent success of the Lions, including a playoff victory two seasons ago, Holliday acknowledges that Victory Christian football is still a work in progress. “We are not quite there yet, but as things turn – If we can get everybody to buy in to what we are doing, from administration to parents, into getting on board and going for the same thing and the same goals – if we can get that, we can be a team that won’t get stopped in the first round of the playoffs. We can be one of those teams that can go far.”
“We’ve been working hard, doing everything we possibly can to be best for the season. We’ve been hitting the gym, hitting those weights hard three days a week (over the summer) for two hours starting at 7am. It has put us in a mindset to win this year.” – Cage Jackson OL/NG Victory Christian School |
“(My teammates) should know that success is coming. We’ve done too much over this summer for them to not know that it is coming. We will see it real soon during the Jamboree game, and we will see it throughout the season.” – Aaron Jernigan WR/CB Victory Christian School |
“Well, first of all we play for God … everything comes through Him first. We pray for guidance all the time – In the locker room, before practice, after practice, before games. It is an important part of who we are.” – Griffin Staples RT/DE Victory Christian School |
