Voters across Alabama voted on a full ballot for the primary election on Tuesday. Over 200 positions statewide were up for election, including those for St. Clair County Sheriff and St. Clair County Board of Education Superintendent.

There was a total of 805,039 ballots cast statewide with only 23.83% of registered voters showing up to the polls.

Locally, St. Clair County Sheriff nominee Billy Murray secured 74.15% of total votes to become the new sheriff. At an election viewing held at the Pell City Center for Education and Performing Arts, Murray stood with his family and supporters awaiting the results from Tuesday’s election. He thanked his family for enduring the “extremely difficult” task of running for public office and hopes the struggles of campaigning does not dissuade qualified candidates from running in the future.

“The men and women of this sheriff’s office were forefront in my mind, when my feet hit the floor,” Murray said. “I thank them, for them to stand out for me day after day, whether they were putting up signs, calling, or speaking on my behalf….I am so thankful.”

Murray gathered a large lead over opponent Roy Mullins for the Sheriff’s nomination, who received 25.85% of the vote.

“To the men and women of the Sheriff’s office, buckle your seat belts, lock them down, because where we’re going no one else in this state will be there,” Murray said. “Everyone else will follow and we will lead.”

In the run for St. Clair County Board of Education Superintendent, candidate Greg Cobb was defeated by Mike Howard to win the nomination, who garnered 67.20% of the total votes across the 32 voting precincts in St. Clair County.

“I’m excited about the next chapter in my life and for our school system. I will not take office until January, so I encourage everyone to support Mrs. Seals for the remainder of her term, because I will,” Howard shared on his Facebook page. “She is still my Superintendent and I will continue to give her respect and admiration. I am asking that you do the same. Today is the day to mend fences, to bury hatchets, and come together regardless of which candidate you supported. My vision has been for St. Clair County to #BecomeTheBar since I began this campaign. We will only reach that by becoming united as one. We cannot be divided on topics that affect our students, we must work together for them. Together, we are #StClairStrong. Thank you again for your overwhelming vote of confidence and now…LET’S GET TO WORK!”

St. Clair County District Attorney Richard Minor was elected to the Court of Criminal Appeals Judge Place 1, receiving 66% of the vote over opponent Riggs Walker.

Statewide, Walt Maddox will be the Democratic nominee for Governor while incumbent Kay Ivey secured the Republican nomination with 56% of the vote.

Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh secured the Republican nomination for Lt. Governor with 43% of the vote.

In the close race for Attorney General, Steve Marshall and Troy King both received 28% of the vote, which could lead to a run off in July. Joseph Siegelman received the Democratic nomination for Attorney General. He will face off against the Republican candidate in November.

Secretary of State opponents will see Heather Milam (D) and John Merrill (R) the incumbent on the ballot in general election.
