The Delta Kappa Gamma (DKG) Society International Delta Omicron Chapter of Pell City met last week to celebrate teachers, and not just any teachers but those that have attained the distinction of Teacher of the Year, National Board Certified Teacher, or are retiring this year.

“We are recognizing excellence and the future of our profession,” said Leslie Hughes, third grade teacher at Walter M. Kennedy Elementary School and first Vice President of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.  “Saying ‘I am an educator’ means something. We make a difference in this world.”

Among those recognized in the Pell City School System are:

Amanda Slaughter, Iola Roberts Teacher of the Year

Crystal Mitchell, Walter M. Kennedy Elementary School Teacher of the Year

Kayla Lee, Coosa Valley Elementary School Teacher of the Year

The mission of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International is to promote professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. They promote programs for local teachers, counselors, artists, coaches, and volunteers to foster fellowship and networking for educators throughout the school system and across grade and subject levels.

The Delta Omicron Chapter supports the local YWCA shelter for domestic abuse victims through ongoing collection of toiletry items and supports The Wellhouse, a local rescue organization for victims of sex trafficking. The Chapter also provides grant-in-aid to selected Pell City graduates who pursue a college degree in education.
