The community continues to come together after a confirmed EF-2 tornado hit the Greensport community near Ashville Monday night.

“I got up early this morning (Tuesday) to check damage across the county from the storms last night,” St. Clair County Commissioner Tommy Bowers shared on his Facebook page. “It was tough to see damage that has hurt so many due to the loss or damage to homes, belongings, vehicles, boats, and all things right down to the kitchen sink. I talked to many residents today that where harmed by those storms. One family ran to a small closet in the middle of their house. When they came out their belongings were mostly gone.”

After an initial assessment from the St. Clair County EMA, they determined there were 48 homes affected, 13 with major damage, and two homes were destroyed. Only minor injuries were reported.

The National Weather Service confirmed Wednesday the damage is consistent with an EF-2 tornado.

The St. Clair County Road Dept. has cleared debris from roads, which included downed trees and power lines. Around 80-100 Alabama Power units are working to replace the poles destroyed in the storm. The Red Cross is on scene providing drinks and snacks for residents and volunteers. St. Clair Baptist Disaster Team, local fire departments, St. Clair Sheriff’s Dept., EMA, and many other volunteers are or have been assisting in the recovery efforts.

“Please pray for these great residents that were helping each other pick up what was left,” Bowers said. “All were remarkably in good spirits and saying we’ll be alright. They need our thoughts and prayers not only tonight but for weeks to come.”
