Inmate found dead in St. Clair Co. Jail in Pell City

An inmate housed at the St. Clair County Jail in Pell City was found dead in his cell early Wednesday morning.

Cody Lee Kitchens, 32, of Ragland, who was housed alone in his cell, was found by a corrections officer hanging from his bunk and unresponsive according to reports from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department. Time of death was reported as 1:28 a.m. on the morning of Feb. 21.

Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) will be leading the investigation with assistance from the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office into the death.

Kitchens was in jail for numerous Failure to Appear (FTA) charges- Escape, FTA-unlawful possession of a controlled substance (UPCS), FTA- unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia (UPDP), FTA- Receiving stolen property, FTA- attempting to elude, FTA- Carrying a concealed weapon and FTA- various traffic offenses.
