The Springville Tigers made it a clean sweep of the Moody Blue Devils in last weekend’s St. Clair County Tournament Basketball Championship Saturday.
Springville started the night off with a 39 – 21 victory in the JV game. Moody finished as runner up and Springville took home the trophy.
The game between the Lady Blue Devils and the Lady Tigers was the game of the night.
It was a struggle out of the gate for the Lady Devils. Moody trailed 9–2 after the first quarter and trailed 13–3 with 5:07 left in the first half. Kayla Ellis, who scored all of the Blue Devils first 5 points, later completed a huge four-point play that was a part of an 8–0 run by Moody. The Lady Devils trailed 13–11 with 1:52 left in the half. Ellis connected on a three-point basket at the half time buzzer to give Moody its first lead of the game 15–13 at halftime.
Springville retook the lead and pushed it up to five points late in the third. Moody fought back and the two teams traded the lead the rest of the quarter. Ellis scored at the buzzer once again, this time with a lay up to give Moody the lead back after three quarters 25–24.
Moody worked their lead out to five points 38–33 with 2 minutes left in the game. The Lady Tigers clawed their way back to tie the game at 38 all with 19.6 seconds left. Both teams had a chance to win the game in regulation, but the game went into overtime tied at 38.
The game was tied at 45 points with 5.5 seconds left and Springville at the line. Both free throws where good. Moody missed its last shot and the Lady Tigers celebrated the St. Clair County Championship title. Moody was the runnerup.
In the last game of the night, the Springville Tiger varsity boys controlled the game throughout to get the win.
It was a slow and quiet first quarter with both teams missing shots, but they both got in a better flow later in the quarter with Springville holding an 11–7 lead after one.
Springville outscored Moody 17–11 in the second quarter to push the Tiger lead up to 28 – 18 at halftime.
Still a slow scoring game in the third by both teams with 17 combined points in the quarter. Moody outscored Springville 10–7 in the quarter but stilled trailed by 7 points 35 – 28.
Moody trailed 41 – 35 midway into the fourth. The Blue Devils had a window of opportunity in the quarter where Springville had gone cold for a few minutes, but Moody could not capitalize. Moody cut the Tiger lead to four points late, but that’s as close as they could get. Springville wins the County Championship 57–47.
