On Nov. 9 and 10 at 6 p.m. the Pell City Players and ASPCI present ‘Arsenic and Old Lace.’ Dinner will be served but don’t worry, they won’t we serving elderberry wine.

The Pell City Players will present a southern-style version of the classic play ‘Arsenic and Old Lace,’ written by American playwright Joseph Kesselring in 1939.

“We have a cast of twelve and they are constantly moving,” director Kathy McCoy said. “We have a full set background and a very talented cast.”

The play is a dark comedy surrounding the exploits of the Brewster sisters, Abby (Brenda McKay) and Martha (Suzanne Vandall.) When their nephew Mortimer (Joaquin Guzman) discovers their penchant for murder, he finds himself in quite a dilemma.

The cast includes a variety of players, including Bridgett Alverson as Elaine, Chuck Cohron as Mr. Gibbs, Dee Parsons as Dr. Einstein (not Albert), James Ezley as Officer Klein, Jerod Ezley as Officer BrophyMollie Roberts as Officer OHara, Chuck Moore as Doc Harper, Matthew Nixon as Teddy Roosevelt, and director Kathy McCoy also taking on the role of Ms. Witherspoon.

Fourteen-year-old Selby Whaley, who made her debut in the Pell City Players production of ‘Sister Act’ will be playing Joanie Brewster. The role was “Johnnie” in the original play, but a few changes have been made.

Whaley brings a sinister quality to the part to round out the impassioned cast.

The play will be performed on Nov. 9 and 10 at Celebrations in Pell City. Tickets are $50 each and dinner is included, or $450 for a reserved table of eight. Deadline to purchase tickets is Nov. 6. Proceeds will benefit the Pell City Players whose goal is to “enrich lives through theatre” and ASPCI, who assist in solving pet overpopulation by providing reduced cost spay and neuter certificates and working to foster pets.
