- The “Tractor Man” also has four tractor “pedal cars” that he displays, that he says are extremely hard to find.
Odenville now has a new tradition thanks to resident Serrell Fleming, also known as the “Tractor Man.”
For the second Fourth of July in a row, Fleming has lined-up all 14 antique tractors in his collection alongside Hwy 411 for the public to enjoy during the holiday and throughout the week.
“I began seriously collecting tractors as a hobby about 20 years ago,” Fleming said. “I started going to different shows, and last year (in 2016) decided to share my collection (with the community).”
The oldest tractor in his possession is circa 1938, while the newest model is a 1956 vintage.
“The value of the tractor is not based on how old it is,” Fleming explained, “but how many were made in that model series.”
Only one or two of the tractors have been rebuilt, and the Ford 640 Model is still completely original. However, most in the collection have been repainted or had tires replaced.
Fleming, who just turned 80, does all of his own work and restoration.
“I loved (the display),” said What’s Up in Odenville columnist Trese Mashburn. “(Fleming) is such a nice man—I would never have pegged him for 80 either!”
Odenville’s resident “Tractor Man” also has a number of antique tractor pedal cars included in the display. According to him, those are extremely hard to find.
Some days, he can be found sitting in the shade under a tree, alongside his collection, ready to talk and answer any questions.
“As a resident of Odenville, I’d like to say thank you, Tractor Man, for sharing your hobby and starting a new tradition in our community!” Mashburn stated.
The antique tractor display is located at 8701 Moody Pkwy (Hwy 411), Odenville 35120, across from Bethel Baptist Church. The public is welcome to come, stop and enjoy. While done specifically in observance of the Fourth of July, the tractors will be out approximately a week.
