The Pell City 6U All-Stars and Pell City 8U All-Stars girls’ softball teams are heading to the 2017 Fast Pitch World Series in Gulf Shores from July 9-14.

Coaches Brandon Lee and Blake Mulvehill along with members of the Pell City 6U and 8U All-star teams attended the Pell City City Council meeting on Monday to seek sponsorship for entry fees. The City Council unanimously approved the amounts of $210 and $275 to send both teams to the Fast Pitch World Series.

“We have a great bunch of girls,” Brandon Lee stated. “We try to instill character, the right kind of pride, humility, integrity, and forgiveness. There is more to sports than playing ball. When these girls represent Pell City, they represent us all.”

The Pell City 6U All-Star team began the area tournament with 19 of the state’s top teams in each division. The team was runner-up in the State Championship, losing by only 1 point to State Champions Gardendale in an international tiebreaker inning. The team also won the Central Area tournament game against Hoover in a best out of three match, and are currently ranked third in the nation.

The Pell City 6U and 8U All-Star teams play in the U.S. Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) league through the Pell City Parks and Recreation Department.

“We are creating model citizens through sports,” Blake Mulvehill, co-head coach of the Pell City 8U All-Stars said. “We really appreciate your support of the girls. This [World Series] will be a great experience they will never forget.”

The teams will also be raising additional funds for the Fast Pitch World Series event. On July 1, a percentage of proceeds of meals purchased at Buffalo Wild Wings in Pell City will be donated to the 8U team and on July 5 a percentage will go to the 6U team. Patrons will need to specify that proceeds should go to each team.

“We would like to thank the many businesses that took an interest to sponsor the kids,” Blake Mulvehill said. “There are a lot of generous people that help with fundraisers.”

Brandon Lee added, “It has been a real blessing to represent the community.”
