There’s been a lot of excitement around the greater Leeds area this week and a big congratulations is in order for Miss Leeds Area, Jessica Procter, who was crowned Miss Alabama 2017 on Saturday night at Samford University. We are SO PROUD of you, Jessica, and excited about what’s next. Jessica will go on to Atlantic City to represent the state of Alabama in the upcoming 2018 Miss America competition in September. A send-off party will be planned for late August.

The Leeds Police Department hosted a celebration of the re-opening of their sub-station at Leeds Housing Authority last Wednesday. Chief Ron Reeves, Lieutenant Griffin and several officers cooked hot dogs on the grill and served refreshments for the residents who live there. If you went through the neighborhood between 10 a.m. and noon, you could see a couple of officers going door to door giving out free hot dogs. One of the ladies in the neighborhood driving through stopped to get her hot dog and prayed for the police officers. This sub-station is a joint venture of the Leeds Housing Authority and the City of Leeds.

This Sunday, June 18 is Father’s Day. My dad, Charles Atkinson, has been gone over 30 years. My dad knew no strangers. If he came to your house, he would make himself at home and go straight to the kitchen to see if you had coffee on the stove. If not, he would help himself to make some. He brought home stray cats and even stray people and would give the shirt off his back to those in need. I pray that all of you fathers have a very happy Father’s Day!
