The Pell City Library kicked off St. Patrick Day celebrations early with their Wild and Wonderful Wednesday series on March 15. Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Sam Pointer, performed an array of Irish melodies with traditional instruments and vocals.

Sam Pointer began playing music at the age of six. His talents include playing a variety of guitars: acoustic, electric, slide, and 12-string. Pointer is also proficient with other instruments, including the bass, mandolin, banjo, fiddle, and bouzouki. He applies his vocalist skills to a variety of musical genres, including ballads and rock.

Pointer has toured the country with several different bands, including lead guitarist for New Potato Caboose, a ground-breaking jam band, as a member of California-based bluegrass band, Snakes in the Grass, and the Sam Pointer Band, a rock ensemble based in San Francisco. Pointer returned to his native home, Birmingham, Ala., where he continues playing with a variety of bands and acts, and also solo acoustic shows.

Pointer has won prizes on the guitar and mandolin at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and the Ed Bell Blues Competition.

Sam Pointer will be performing Celtic music with Jason Bailey and Van Hollingsworth on Friday, March 17 at Innisfree Irish Pub in Birmingham, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, visit www.sampointer.com.
