3 killed, 2 injured when pickup truck crashes into Iowa Walmart

PELLA, Iowa — Three people were killed and two were injured when a pickup truck crashed into the front doors of Walmart in Pella, Iowa Thursday morning, according to Iowa State Patrol.

The two people who were injured, one of whom was the truck driver, were transported to Pella Regional Health Center. 

The names of those killed and injured have not yet been released.

Police do not know the cause of the accident. According to Sgt. Nathan Ludwig, law enforcement has no reason to believe that the crash was intentional, but it is still under investigation. 

Police reported that witnesses saw the truck hit the door at a high rate of speed and it did not stop until until it hit a couple of displays inside the doors. The truck was still inside the store after the accident at around 10:45 a.m.

One cement pillar in front of the store was completely knocked over. The two sets of automatic doors that were hit were completely taken out, and a few displays at the entrance of the door were also hit.

After the crash, all Walmart employees and patrons were evacuated and the entrance closed.

Some of the people who had been injured were reported as leaving the scene. Police are still trying to get in contact with those people. 

All available rescue personnel were on the scene of the crash, including the Pella Police Department, Pella Ambulance and Fire, Pella Rural Fire Department, Marion County Sheriff deputies, Iowa State Patrol, Marion County Emergency Management and Knoxville Fire and Rescue.
