The defending class 4A State Champion season came to an end last Friday night with a 40 – 0 blowout loss to Andulusia at Homer Smiles stadium for Leeds, who ends theirs season at 8-4.
Andulusia made the long trip up I-65 to Leeds in the second round of the playoffs last Friday night and they did not hesitate to welcome themselves to Homer Smiles field. The Bulldogs stopped the Greenwave in three plays and got the ball at their own 39 yard line. A 35 yard pass play set the Bulldogs up in Leeds’ territory. Two plays later, Darrion George scored from 14 yards out. With the extra point, Andalusia was up 7 – 0.
The Greenwave’s muffed punt set up the Bulldogs next score. Andalusia only took three plays from 19 yards out to score and go up 14 – 0 after the first quarter.
Andalusia started the second quarter second and seven at the Leeds 49. Another big pass play, this time for 32 yards, set the Bulldogs up at the Leeds 7 yard line. Jamal Herrell scored on the very next play from five yards out. The extra point failed, but the Bulldogs now led 20 – 0. A 26 yard pass play from Ethan Wilson to Derrick McQueen put the Bulldogs up 27 – 0 at halftime.
The Bulldogs’ defense was in attack mode all night as they did not allow the Greenwave offense pass the 50 yard line throughout the first half.
The two teams exchanged possessions in the beginning of the third quarter. The Bulldogs would not be stopped the entire quarter. Zackery Woods put the Bulldogs up 33 – 0 with and 18 yard touchdown run. The route was on.
Andalusia got on the scoreboard once more in the fourth quarter to go up 40 – 0. Reality set in for the Greenwave as the seconds ticked away. It was over. The title defense was over, as was the season.
Leeds had not been shut out since the 2011 season’s loss on the road to the eventual state champion Handley Tigers, and they haven’t been shutout in a playoff game since their 31 – 0 loss to Luke Tuckers’ Fayette County Tigers in the late nineties. The Green Wave will not see the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2005. Leeds finishes the season 8 – 4.
