This year’s ballot in St. Clair County includes four contended races that directly affect residents – U.S. Senate, U.S. Representative and two St. Clair County Commission seats. Click the links to lean more about the candidates:
U.S. Senate
First up, Incumbent Republican Sen. Richard Shelby didn’t need a runoff in 2016 to handle his rivals. Alabama’s senior senator took home more than 500,000 votes in the Primary (67 percent) to set himself up for another run at six years in Washington. Shelby, now 82, has served in the Senate since 1986.
Shelby faces Democratic candidate Ron Crumpton, a former lobbyist who was most recently defeated for a State Senate seat by Jim McClendon of Springville in 2014. Crumpton is a patient’s rights advocate from Pelham.
U.S. Representative, 3rd Congressional District
Incumbent Republican Rep. Mike Rogers is a former member of the Alabama House who was elected to Congress in 2002. He is an attorney who studied at Jacksonville State University and Birmingham School of Law.
Rogers is in a rematch from the 2014 election when he defeated his opponent, Jesse Smith, for the seat. Jesse Smith is an Iraqi War veteran who entered a career as a federal civil service employee. His platform includes veterans, voting rights and education issues.
St. Clair Commission, District 3
Incumbent Republican candidate Tommy Bowers defeated former County Commission Chair Stan Batemon in the Primary and now faces Independent candidate Cary H. Ward.
St. Clair Commission, District 4
Incumbent Republican candidate Jimmy Roberts defeated former Pell City Mayor Mack Abercrombie in the Primary and now faces Independent candidate Jacob Moore.
