Donald Trump may be raising money to fund his presidential campaign, but his supporters say they’re not worried about him becoming beholden to special interests.
He’s different, they said.
Trump excited supporters by self-financing his primary campaign. At a rally in South Carolina before that state’s Republican primary, he drew cheers by saying he wouldn’t even return lobbyists’ calls.
Now the Republican presidential nominee, Trump has to raise money to catch up with Democrat Hillary Clinton’s fundraising advantage. According to reports, his main contributors include hedge fund magnate Robert Mercer and Los Angeles developer Geoff Palmer.
Republican convention delegates who said they aren’t concerned about Trump’s fundraising include Steve Ward, of Los Angeles.
“I think he’ll make less deals than Hillary,” he said.
Ken Gross, a delegate from Knoxville, Tennessee, also pointed to Clinton, saying the Democrat has spent decades in the D.C. world of traded favors and bought-and-sold votes.
“That’s not the way Trump thinks,” he said.
