Building a home together

The Beavers now have a new place to call home, thanks to efforts from Habitat for Humanity. The family’s home is one of the 12 houses the organization has built in Pell City.

The family of four consists of Asa, Lisa, Jacob and Alex. Jacob is going into 10th grade and Alex is going into sixth grade.

The house is a two bedroom, two bath home with an open kitchen and living room. One of the houses best assets, in Lisa’s opinion, is the spacious backyard.

“It’s so open and great, the boys love it,” Lisa said. “Having such a big yard this close to town is incredible and we are excited that the boys get to enjoy it.”

The house is built off of 20th Street in Pell City, a street that several Habitat homes have been constructed on. Board Director John Rickards pointed out the other homes at the Beavers’ home dedication Sunday, July 10.

“We build these houses for families not as a handout, but as a helping hand,” Rickards said. “This particular house was built in about eight years ago for another family, and we have renovated it for the Beavers.”

Rickards said that the goal for these houses was to provide the families places to live, at an affordable rent and possible own in the future. He said that Habitat allows families to purchase the homes for the rate that it cost to construct them. The Beavers have been renting their home and will be purchasing it later this summer.

“They are becoming hometowns and contributing to the Pell City economy,” Rickards said.

The family is excited to be making the house their home and are very thankful for those that have helped them throughout the journey.

“This is just so amazing,” Lisa said as she walking through her new home. “We are so blessed to have this as our home, and everyone with Habitat has been there for us every step of the way, it’s an outpouring of love.”

Habitat works in nearly 1,400 communities across the country, helping families achieve the stability and self-reliance they need to build a better future for themselves through affordable housing. This branch of Habitat for Humanity works exclusively within Pell City School System limits. For more information on the organization, visit habitat.org.
