Randolph County deputy shot, suspect dead following hostage situation

[Randolph County, Ala.] —  Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) are investigating a Randolph County Sheriff’s Deputy-involved shooting at the request of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and the Randolph County District Attorney. The incident began as a domestic situation with an armed subject. The situation escalated when the subject shot a Randolph County Deputy. The standoff that began around 12 p.m. today, July 9, ended with the suspect dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. The Deputy is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Once the investigation is complete, the findings will be turned over to the Randolph County District Attorney’s office. Nothing further is available as the investigation is ongoing.

Sheriff David Cofield with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Department would like to thank the following agencies for their assistance: Chambers, Calhoun, Cleburne, and Clay County Sheriff’s offices along with Anniston/Oxford SWAT, Heflin Police Department, Roanoke Police Department, and Lineville Police Department as well as ALEA State Troopers and Tactical team. This incident is not related to the events that have occurred across the nation this week.
