UPDATE: repairs complete on I-20 East in Cook Springs

Traffic on I-20 East on April 6 was backed up for miles between Cook Springs and Moody.

Today, ALDOT workers closed two lanes of I-20 Eastbound near mile marker 149 to repair damage to the road following a fatal accident and fire last week.

The repairs took place at the top of Prescott Hill just east of the Brompton exit (147), and traffic was backed up approximately four miles at 12:30 p.m., almost to Leeds / Moody Exit 144.

Repairs were needed after a gasoline tanker overturned and caught fire at the site. The fire melted a portion of all three eastbound lanes at the location.

If traffic is still congested, drivers can use US 78 East if possible, but traffic from tractor-trailers and others exiting at Brompton appeared to be slowing that route considerably. Another option is to use US 411 or Kelley Creek Road to access Alabama 174 and return to I-20 at Exit 158 in Pell City.
