- Stan Batemon
Stan Batemon grew up in Fultondale and graduated from Tarrant H.S. He is the oldest of the 7 children born to the late Rev. Hubert Batemon and Evelyn, whose families are from strong farming communities of Holly Pond, Alabama.
During his high school days Stan’s daddy started the Taylors Missionary Baptist Church in Moody. After graduating from high school Stan attended Jeff State Community College. The Vietnam War was a very big part of our country’s mission at the time and some of Stan’s friends joined the National Guard, and two even left our country to avoid the draft. Stan decided that the honorable thing to do would be to enlist in our military, and he joined the U.S. Marine Corps in January 1968.
After serving his country, he finished his Marine Corps duty and returned home to a very changed world. He experienced rejection and shame for being a decorated Marine Vietnam combat veteran, but he joined the National Guard, re-enrolled at Jeff State, finished with two associate degrees (Biology and Business Administration) and moved on to U.A.B., where he received a degree in Police Administration with graduate work in Marine Biology. He attended Birmingham School of Law. He had been blessed to be hired as an Alabama State Game Warden during this time of night school studies and was assigned to St. Clair County in 1973.
Stan had a strong commitment to serve his community other than as our Game Warden, and he quickly became involved in the Pell City Chamber of Commerce and the Pell City Lions Club and he actually was elected two times as President of each organization. He held the first organizational meeting at Coosa Valley School to form the New London Volunteer Fire Dept. He was instrumental in creating the Pell City Leadership Program which later became Leadership St. Clair County. He was serving on the Pell City Industrial Development Board when he helped lead a group to create the St. Clair County Economic Development Authority and has been very active in recruiting both domestic and foreign companies to locate plants and create jobs in our county.
Stan served as a Sunday School teacher at Cropwell Baptist Church for several years before moving his membership to Mt. Pisgah and is now an active member at Church of The Highlands, where he has served as Greeter and as a Small Group Leader.
Stan was elected to the St. Clair County Commission in 1986 and served as Commission Chairman from 1998 until his retirement in 2014. He has served as a Board member of the National Association of Counties and as Board member and as President of the Association of Commissions of Alabama. As the Chairman of the National Veterans Services Committee he established the first County Veterans Services Officer position working with the St. Clair County Extention Service.
Stan is continuing to serve his community in many ways and asks for your vote on March 1.
