A graduate of Brantley High School in Crenshaw County, Ala., Tommy was offered a football scholarship to Jacksonville State University. Due to the very limited income of he and his mother (his father died when he was 10) he turned down the scholarship to go directly to work. The morning after graduating from high school he left for Basic Training, and eventually served 13 years in the Alabama Army National Guard. After returning from Basic, he worked at a sewing factory.
