What’s up in Odenville: Snowmen and scarecrows

Published 9:30 am Thursday, November 5, 2015

Hello readers! I’m back with this week’s edition of What’s Up in Odenville.

Well. It’s here. November. The month holiday fanatics live for because they can decorate for Thanksgiving AND Christmas simultaneously. It’s absolute mayhem: everywhere you look you can see scarecrows AND snowmen. I always have a hard time with this because I feel I must choose between the two. I like them BOTH. They make me happy, if not a little confused. So what does one do? You put them both out and confuse everyone else so you are not alone!

Let’s get to the news:

Community

Odenville has a unique little gem I bet most of you aren’t even aware of. You pass by it almost daily and never even think twice. I am as guilty as anyone, but this week I had the opportunity to amend that during a tour of the Odenville Fortson Museum and Archives.

It was absolutely amazing, and if you don’t go to see for yourself then you are missing out on the history that makes Odenville special.

A lot of time and effort went to restoring the building that once held the bank and the post office in Odenville. A lot of research went on behind the scenes and searching for the right pieces to display. All this is thanks to Paul and Brenda Riddle and Ann Coupland, just to recognize a few. The museum is located on Alabama Street next to the Library and is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1-4 p.m. Take the time to stop in and see all the interesting parts of history that make Odenville great.

The St. Clair County High School Cross Country Track team will be competing at sectionals Thursday Nov. 5 at Cold Springs High School in Bremen. GO SAINTS!

SCCHS Wrestling season is almost here. Practice with new wrestling coach Greg Jefcoat began this week with weigh-ins scheduled for next weekend. Everyone is excited to have Coach Jefcoat on staff and looking forward to a successful season!

OYAA will be competing in the 2nd Annual CYCA Cheer Competition this Sunday at the CEPA Building in Pell City. Eight parks from local areas including Odenville, Springville, Moody, Pell City, Clay, Irondale, and Gardendale will compete in grades K-7. Doors open at 12 with the Junior division starting at 1 p.m. Admission is $8 and children 5 and under are free.

Applications are now being accepted for Christmas Village! This program is designed to help families in the St. Clair County areas that need assistance providing Christmas gifts for their children. This program is different than others, as parents are invited to North Valley Church to participate in the gift choosing for each child. North Valley Church partners with Argo Christmas for Kids and Argo Food Bank for this program so only apply at one place. Please email iServe@mynvc.org for an application.

The City of Margaret will host their 2nd Annual Turkey Shoot November 7, 14 and 21 at Wilson Park of Co Road 12 at 8 a.m. Proceeds benefit the City of Margaret’s Toys for Kids program.

Going through a divorce or separation can be especially difficult during the holidays. There will be a Surviving the Holidays event hosted by our local DivorceCare ministry in Pell City on Nov. 14 from 2-4 p.m. at The Brook Besor Coffee Shop. Registration fee for the event is $10. If you or someone you know is going through divorce or separation, please encourage them to call Randy Smith 369-0006 for more information.
