When Pharmacist Ginny Northam received a phone call after hours from one of her patients, she didn’t think twice about what she was going to do. She left home, went straight to Ashville Drugs, let herself in the building and headed behind the counter.
The call had been from one of her regular patients, a man who required insulin injections. His wife had fallen ill and had been hospitalized. In the confusion and stress of that situation, he had neglected to pick up his insulin prescription from the pharmacy.

By the time he realized it, the pharmacy was closed for the night, but he needed the medication immediately. He used the pharmacy’s emergency number and got in touch with Northam, who did not hesitate to pick up his medication and take it to him.
Ashville Drugs has been serving the community for over 70 years and has worked to maintain their title as “Your Hometown Drugstore.” The staff is committed to immersing the business into the community and gaining lasting relationships with patients.
Ashville has a population of just over 2,000, and the town has a tight-knit feel that Ashville Drugs thrives within. The pharmacy, one of three alongside Odenville Drugs and MainStreet Drugs in Pell City, serves the northern part of the county, with patients spanning into the Etowah and Gadsden area.
But it’s Ashville’s community atmosphere staff members credit for their years of dedicated service.
“I like having my neighbors as my patients,” technician Julie Smith said. “Having these relationships helps us help them medically. Because we know what they’ve been through in the past, we can use that as a guide for how to treat them now.”
“When I go to the store, I will see my patients and we can have a conversation about their health because we know their records so well,” Pharmacist Katie Dooley said.
Northam has been with Ashville Drugs for almost 15 years. For her, the closeness of the community can often blur the lines of business and personal life.
“Over the years I’ve been here, there has been an overall shift to a focus on people,” Northam said. “We take the time to educate our customers on their medications and make sure they feel comfortable with it before they leave.”
“We try to offer everything a big pharmacy has but better,” Dooley added.
At Ashville Drugs, a prescription can be turned around for a customer in 15 minutes, and it accept most insurance. The staff at Ashville Drugs also works to stay ahead of pharmacy corporations by offering something they cannot — personal service.
“When we say we are friends with our customers, it’s the truest statement we could make,” Northam said. “The customers we have come in are our kids’ teachers, our neighbors and members of our church.”
Northam said what makes a business successful in the pharmacy industry is open communication.
“We try to be available to all of our customers for their questions and concerns,” she said. “We want them to not hesitate to call us if they have questions, we want to be the experts that they know they can always get a hold of.”
