Leeds suffers ‘heartbreaking’ overtime loss

TaDarryl Marshall’s superman performance was not enough last Friday night as the Munford Lions came from behind three different times to upset the Leeds Green Wave 49-48 in overtime. Leeds is 1-2 to start and will travel to face class 5A Central of Clay County tomorrow night.
The Green Wave got off to a fast start on their first two possessions. Marshall connected with Koi Freeman on a beautiful catch in the back corner of the end zone. Marshall followed that up with a 33-yard run for a touchdown. The Lions put together a sustaining drive that ended with an Avery Harris four-yard touchdown. Leeds led 13-7 after the first quarter.
The fireworks kept on pace in the second quarter. Marshall scored to put Leeds up 20-7. Leeds looked to go up by a bigger margin later in the second after Jaylen Washington picked off Avery Harris’ pass. Leeds gave it right back after with a fumble on the next play. Six plays later, Harris connected with Marshall Clark for a nine-yard touchdown to pull with 20 – 14 at the half.
The Lions put the Green Wave on the ropes to start the third quarter when Harris scored from four yards out to give Munford a 21- 20 lead. Leeds answered the bell when Marshall connected with Freeman once again, this time for a forty-eight-yard touchdown pass. Marshall scored on the two-point try and Leeds was back on top 28 -21 with 6:06 left in the third. Leeds held that seven-point lead the rest of the quarter.
Leeds had the ball second and seven at the Lions 20-yard line to start the fourth quarter. Marshall scored once again from one yard out, but the extra point failed. Leeds held a 34 – 21 lead. The Lions would not go away, and they scored once again to pull within six points, 34 – 28. Marshall super hero night continued with a 54-yard run to the end zone for a touchdown. The two point try was good and Leeds was up 42 – 28 with 3:54 left in the game. The Lions again would not go away as they scored from 22-yards out. Josephous Smith blocked the extra point to help Leeds hold an eight-point lead with 2:40 left in the game. The Lions defense stopped the Green Wave offense on three plays forcing a punt. Marshall shanked the punt and Munford had a short field to drive starting from the Leeds 36. With 29.2 seconds left in the game, Harris connected with Kyle Ross for a touchdown in the back corner of the end zone. The two-point try was good and the game was now tied, at 42. Koi Freeman fell 20 yards short of returning the ensuing kickoff all the way for an 85-yard touchdown. He was knocked out of bounds at the 20-yard line. Leeds lined up for a 32-yard field goal that was blocked, taking the game to overtime.
The Lions had the ball first in overtime and scored two plays later with a Harris to Quantavious Elston nine-yard touchdown pass to go up 49 – 42 with the extra point. Marshall scored from five yards out but the two-point try failed. The Lions got their revenge and the upset over the Green Wave 49 – 48.
The stat line of the night belonged to Marshall. His superhero performance included 24 carries for 183 yards and five touchdowns, 5 – 9 passing for 100 yards and two touchdowns. Koi Freeman was the recipient of the touchdown passes with 100 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Tre Nation had 78 yards rushing on 12 carries.
Leeds will travel to Central of Clay County to take on the 5A Volunteers. Leeds defeated the Volunteers last season, so it will be another revenge game. Leeds will return home for a two-game home stand starting next week with homecoming against Elmore County and a Thursday night tilt on September 24, against 3A power Piedmont. Kickoff for tomorrow night’s game at Central of Clay County is at 7 p.m.
