Ashville Bulldogs ›› Next: @ Piedmont ›› Last: Ashville 59, White Plains 0
A balanced running and passing attack coupled with a ferocious defensive effort that forced seven White Plains turnovers were the key elements in Ashville’s 59-0 trouncing of the Wildcats.
Ashville quarterback Judd Mundy carried the ball in for two of his three rushing touchdowns in the first half. The extra point was no good, so 6-0 would remain the score. Hunter Huckbay added to the carnage with a six-yard touchdown run along with a touchdown reception at the end of the game.
Ashville did most of its damage in the second half with an unanswered avalanche of 41 points. Running back Kyle King was the star after halftime, compiling touchdown runs of 57 and 68 yards. Bulldogs wide receiver Landon Cornutt got into the act with a touchdown reception of his own from Mundy as the Bulldogs soared in an impressive offensive scoring performance.
Week 2 Preview: Ashville @ Piedmont
Hopefully Ashville’s opening victory has given them confidence, which they will need when they tangle on the road with AHSWA #3 ranked Piedmont.
Defensively the Bulldogs are going to have to put their most athletic linebacker in a position to spy Piedmont quarterback Taylor Hayes, who ran for 145 yards on 26 carries, including the game-winning 17-yard touchdown in last week’s victory over Cherokee County. The challenge for the rest of the defense is to stop running back Darnell Jackson, who was able to rush for 135 yards and two touchdowns last week, nearly all of which was done in the first half. Ashville’s front seven will have its hands full on Friday.
On offense, Stoney Merritt should have opportunities to throw the ball on Piedmont. Cherokee County was very successful attacking Piedmont through the air last week, so if Merritt has a good game, things should look good for the Bulldogs against their toughest opponent on the schedule.
