Pell City leaders are estimating six positions will be created by its new Animal Control Department, which is being organized following the recent termination of the City’s contract with the Animal Shelter of Pell City, Inc. (ASPCI).

During the Pell City City Council Meeting on August 10, the new jobs were discussed and approved. The positions fall under the Pell City Police Department and will be advertised at the following hourly wage salaries.

• Animal Control Supervisor- $14.52

• Animal Control Tech- $13.29

• Animal Control Clerk- $10.50

• Animal Control Assistant (part time)- $9.89

More detailed job descriptions are available online at newsaegis.com.

Besides adding three full-time positions, the City will recruit at least three part time workers to assist in the operation. The total cost of all six of these positions with benefits is estimated to be approximately $185,000 annually.

City Manager Brian Muenger said previously that some of the current ASPCI employees were excellent candidates for these positions, and he encouraged them to apply.

With the Council’s approval of these positions, the City will immediately initiate the recruitment process in anticipation of the first day of operation on Sept. 15.

Pell City has also negotiated the purchase of assets and equipment from ASPCI’s operation at the facility on Airport Road. During the meeting, Muenger said the City was getting a fair deal for the quality and quantity of the equipment they were purchasing.

The equipment, including kennels and other animal care items, is industrial grade and will remain serviceable for many years to come. Muenger said

buying these items for $18,000 is a good deal for the City, along with preventing potential long lead-time for replacing this specialized equipment.
