Alabama boy gets “Tyrannosaur”-al wish

SPRINGVILLE — Wish Kid Justin McCain couldn’t believe his eyes when he came face to face with a “real” Tyrannosaurs Rex; “real” being the animatronic dinosaur on the “Jurassic Park” ride at Universal Studios. That moment was definitely the highlight of Justin’s wish trip granted by children’s charity Kids Wish Network. In preparation, he’d been practicing his dinosaur acting as much as possible in between treatments for his life-threatening condition.

In early 2010, Justin’s infant baby brother was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. This news prompted the entire family to get tested, and Justin’s results returned positive. Cystic fibrosis is characterized by the production of abnormal mucus that is excessively thick and sticky and can lead to blockages in the lungs and airways and cause dangerous infections.

To treat his complex disease, 9-year-old Justin takes a combination of 20 different medications, vitamins and other supplements every day. He also participates in daily chest therapies to help loosen the thick mucus buildup and uses an inhaler twice per day. As a preventative measure, Justin is homeschooled and the family takes major precautions to prevent him from falling ill. Even the smallest respiratory bug can affect Justin’s health severely.

Justin follows his rigorous therapy schedule dutifully so he can participate in his favorite activities, mainly cross-country running and pretending to be a Tyrannosaurs Rex. His family says he has mastered the art of impersonating a T-Rex, including eating his food as the gigantic dinosaur would.

On Justin’s wish trip provided by Kids Wish Network, he finally got to see a life-size T-Rex in action to compare his skills. Justin and the McCain family were treated to an all-inclusive wish trip to visit the theme parks in Orlando, FL. The family stayed at luxury accommodations, dined at local restaurants, and enjoyed all the parks had to offer. Visiting the dinosaur-themed rides and exhibits at Universal Studios was Justin’s favorite part, along with a specifically-planned dinner at T-Rex Café.

“We really appreciate all the details that were put into Justin’s wish,” recalls mom Jennifer McCain. “It really was Justin’s dream come true. This was a trip he will always remember and we thank Kids Wish Network for granting his wish.”

On behalf of Justin and his family, Kids Wish Network would like to thank all the generous sponsors that helped make Justin’s dream come true: Royale Parc Suites, T-Rex Café, CiCi’s Pizza, and Compassion Partners Program.

Justin receives regular checkups every three months to monitor his life-threatening condition and will continue his daily routine of medication and therapies for the rest of his life.
