VALDOSTA, Georgia – Nursing home resident Janet Clements, 66, has been charged with murder in the strangulation death of her roommate, according to authorities.
Valdosta Police Department and emergency medical services responded to the Crestwood Nursing Home on Tuesday and found Cynthia Weekly, 57, unresponsive in her assigned room when EMS arrived.
She was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police reports.
Detectives said they did not find evidence of any significant injuries but requested an autopsy by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
“We were told that at some point during the night there was an argument between the two roommates,” said Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress. “The staff also told us that Ms. Clements indicated that she may have hurt Ms. Weekley.”
A medical examiner conducted an autopsy Thursday morning.
“One of our detectives attended the autopsy, and based on the autopsy we were advised there was foul play involved and that she was strangled,” Childress said.
Clements was arrested Thursday and charged with felony murder and aggravated assault by strangulation, according to Childress. Clements was transported to the Lowndes County Jail where she is being held pending judicial proceedings.
