To call what Apollos Hester did Friday an interview is almost an injustice.

When Hester’s East View High (Texas) Patriots came back to win after trailing 28-14 at halftime,  the tailback gave a motivational speech that would make the likes of Tony Robbins and Morgan Freeman jealous.

In post-game interviews, most athletes tend to focus strictly on the game or themselves. But Hester doesn’t fit into that category. His answer to one question went viral when he gave an impassioned postgame interview with TWC news channel Friday after helping his team forge a 42-41 comeback victory over Vandegrift High.

Hester’s speech began as a simple explanation about his team getting down early and fighting to come back. It quickly turned to an oratory on life, faith and inner strength — deep subject matter for a young man in high school.

“All it takes to be successful is an attitude,” Hester said. “And that’s what our coach told us. He said, ‘Hey, it’s gonna be tough, it’s gonna be hard. You’re gonna go out there, you’re gonna battle, you’re gonna fight, you’re gonna do it for one another. Do it for each other, you’re gonna do it for yourself, you’re gonna do it for us, and you’re gonna go out with this win.’ And we believed that, we truly did. And it’s an awesome feeling.”
