Joe Funderburg has qualified as a candidate for mayor of Pell City.
“With the present government changing, this is an important time for any elected official in Pell City,” he said.  “It is essential that the transition be made smoothly and efficiently.”
A graduate of Jacksonville State University and Mississippi State University, Funderburg holds degrees in sociology and criminology.  He served as chief probation officer for St. Clair County’s juvenile court system from 1976 to 2009.
He later worked for the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services in Nashville and with the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice before retiring last year.
Funderburg was elected to three terms on the Pell City Board of Education, has served as the panel’s chairman, and has unsuccessfully sought the mayor’s office on two previous occasions.  He and his family reside in the Mays Bend community.
“I want to be able to work closely with the council, city manager, and most importantly, the people of Pell City,” he said. “There are issues we’re all well aware of that I’d like to see the council, mayor, and city manager address and hopefully find some workable solutions to.”
He pledged to work closely with constituents if elected.  “I believe that any elected body should be a voice of the people and be able to lend its ear to what is going on in the community.  Together, we can work through any problems we may have in the future.”
