The adage “better late than never” has been used to the point of becoming cliché, but Pell City alumna Dre Lane happily attests to its verity.

She has accepted a scholarship to play softball for Talladega College, signing the pact several weeks after most offers have already been made.
“I’m very excited about it,” Lane said. “It’s a little late, and I didn’t think it was going to happen.”
A varsity player for the Lady Panthers since her eighth grade season, she became a fixture at third base, the position she will play for the Lady Tornadoes in the spring. “I like the corners, and I like become a barrier between the runner and home. The challenge is that balls get hit to you a lot, and they come really fast and really hard.”
Lane took the softball field for the first time at age 6, and varsity coach David Stanford described her as “a steady, solid player and a good student. There is definitely a void we’ll have to fill at third base, but Talladega is getting a well-rounded student athlete.”
C.J. Combs, Talladega’s head softball coach, said she believes Lane will be “a great fit for my program. She has a great attitude, and I believe she’ll set a tone for a lot of the girls on the team. We like to have girls close to home on our teams. It helps with our fan base.”
Lane is the daughter of Broderick and Christie Lane. Her sister Britisha earned a softball scholarship to Gadsden State, where she was a member of the Lady Cardinals for two seasons.
