A 5-year-old boy, J.D. Johnson of Birmingham, was pronounced dead Monday evening after drowning in Logan Martin Lake.

According to St. Clair County coroner, Dennis Russell, Johnson was at the lake with his family for a Memorial Day gathering. Johnson was wading with other children in the lake, but went out too far.

A nurse that happened to be at the park performed CPR on Johnson until paramedics arrived. The paramedics also administered CPR until they reached the hospital. Johnson was pronounced dead, upon arrival, at St. Vincent’s St. Clair Hospital on Monday evening.

Sgt. Don Newton with the Pell City Police Department said that a routine investigation is underway, but the drowning certainly appears to be accidental.
