Patriotic pride oozed through the second grade hallways of Leeds Elementary School (LES) as the must attend annual event, Leedsonian Institute, came to life.
Atticus Tillery in Mrs. Allison Lumsden’s class, brought the characteristics of Mr. Walt Disney to life, telling those that pushed his museum button that Mickey Mouse was originally named Mortimer.
Cayden Mintun in Mrs. Leslie Miller’s class chose skate board great, Tony Hawk.
“Tony Hawk was the first extreme games winner, an Olympic medalist and participated in 70 skating competitions during his career,” said Mintun.
Declaring a fashion statement Audrey Roberts in Mrs. Jackson’s class put on her pearls to channel the classic beauty of Audrey Hepburn while Bella Miller from Mrs. Brasher’s class adorned stylish shades portraying the iconic Jackie Kennedy.
“My style was copied by many young women,” said Miller as Jackie.
NBA great and Leedsonian himself Charles Barkley was embodied by Chris Burge from Mrs. Gay’s class while Ashlyn Mayfield took on the challenge of Oprah Winfrey.
Maya Angelou was seen in the LES hallways in the form of Jayla Rose from Mrs. Christi Trucks class.
When asked how she chose her American Rose replied, “My mom gave me a choice. I like poems and she is a poet.”
Michelle Darabaris’ student Noah Davis took on the role of Dr. Ben Carson.
Excited to be like Dr. Carson when he grows up, Davis said, “I want to be a doctor.”
Taking a turn down the Hall of Experts Mattie Smith from Mrs. Trucks’ class demonstrated the world of dentistry while Mrs. Meg Brantley’s student Kylie Callaway told Leedsonian guests about the 17 different finds of penguins.
Research, creative freedom, hard work and imagination go into developing the Leedsonian Institute. The second grade class takes great pride in making it an annual success.
Family members and other loved ones were heard throughout the halls saying how they enjoyed discovering new things about these historic Americans.
