The Bothwell-Embry House, a beautifully maintained Federal style Home in Ashville, AL’s Historic District, will be offered at auction on Saturday, May 31 by Albert Burney Auction Company.
This home is featured on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places and registered with the Alabama Historical Commission.
The Bothwell –Embry House is architecturally significant as one of the finest remaining early houses in Ashville, AL. Constructed in 1835 as single-pile, Plantation Plain type structure with Federal Period refinements, it has been expanded in several phases (1852, 1882, 1917) and each phase has retained its period integrity. The 1852 additions, which consisted of a dining and kitchen wing and a back porch, were the work of Richard A. Crow, a master builder, who also probably worked with the original builder as a young man. The house is particularly noted for its portico and robust parlor mantel designed in the 18th-century neoclassical Style of the Adams Brothers.
This estate is nestled on 4± virtually flat acres that are fenced to acknowledge the approximate property boundaries. The estate also features a 20×40 gunite heated pool with stone waterfall, exterior lighting, several workshop/sheds and a pool house with bath room. This historic home has been well cared for and meticulously maintained to preserve the character and prestige of this historic estate.
The home is associated with Dr. James J. Bothwell, a locally noted physician and politician. Bothwell, the town’s second physician, also served first as the Clerk of the Circuit Court. In 1882 Lula Bothwell received the house as a wedding gift from her parents when she married James A. Embry, an Ashville attorney. In 1978, the home was purchased by Dr. ad Mrs. Lamar Campbell, a prominent Birmingham ophthalmologist.
