Families from Leeds to Springville all throughout St. Clair County and its neighboring areas are implementing new traditions into their family fun this Christmas season.
One family that’s hitting the ice to embrace a new holiday tradition is the Moore family.
Penny Moore, a National Board Certified teacher in Early Childhood Generalist and Kindergarten teacher at Margaret Elementary School, kicked off her Christmas break by ice skating with her sons at The Outlet Shops of Grand River’s, Grand River On Ice presented by Diet Coke.
Malachi Moore, a sixth grader at Springville Middle School and Ayden Moore, a second grader at Margaret Elementary School are no strangers to the ice.
The Moore family’s advice for first time skaters or those reacquainting themselves with getting on one blade again is it’s all about maintaining your balance.
“My strategy is knees bent and lean forward,” said Penny.
What works for Malachi? One word—balance.
And Ayden takes on the approach many do.
“Holding onto the wall helps get your balance,” Ayden said.
Fortunate to have the same time off as her sons’ school schedule, the Moores will also enjoying going out to eat and taking in some movies over their break.
Capturing the moves of the Moores from the sidelines was Penny’s husband of 12 years, Torrey.
Open through January 5th Grand River on Ice is a 3,500 square feet real ice outdoor skating experience. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online by logging onto www.shopsofgrandriver.com/events.
Sending out a word to the wise before people lace up their skates, Penny said, “It’s fun until you fall on the ice!”
One thing that’s on the entire Moore family’s Christmas wish list is for Grand River on Ice to come back every year so they can make ice-skating a new family tradition.
Their current Christmas traditions are spending Christmas Eve with the boys’ grandparents.
“We eat, play games, exchange gifts and watch movies,” said Penny. “We also celebrate Jesus’ birthday by making cards and singing Happy Birthday to Him on Christmas Day!”
Summing up the Moore family’s Grand River on Ice experience, Torrey said it added a nice touch to their time together this Christmas.
“It was a joy watching my boys and their mom having fun together.”
From The Moore family to yours, they wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
