Four Argo firefighters received recognition for their dedication and service to the Argo community.

At Monday night’s city council meeting, Argo Fire Chief Mike Platts announced promotions for Ryan Wells, Scott Payne, Jake Grunda and Chris Franklin to lieutenants.

The men were presented with red firefighter helmets.

“The red represents lieutenant which means everyone should know these guys are in charge,” Chief Platts said.

Members of the council congratulated them, and a small reception was held in their honor at the fire department following the council meeting.

“Anybody knows working for the City of Argo they don’t always get a whole lot, but we appreciate all that they do,” Mayor Paul Jennings said.

Candidates were evaluated using survey questions and scored on a points system, being judged based on responses.  They received points for the number of training and certification classes they participated in.

Platts sat in on the interviews but brought in three firefighters from area departments to conduct interviews and score evaluations.  Each candidate was graded individually.

“They are finally getting the recognition they deserve,” Platts said.  They are all more than qualified.  They really earned their promotions.”

In other actions at Monday night’s council meeting:

—Approved giving the mayor the authority to spend an amount not to exceed $5,000 on the information sign on Highway 11.

—Approved the request for the purchase of IT equipment for the NFIP coordinator not to exceed $1,000.

—Approved spending an amount not to exceed $300 to publish that the City of Argo has joined the National Floodplain Insurance Program (NFIP) by law, stating that plans to alter floodplain property in any way must now go through the NFIP coordinator.

—Approved the transfer of the GMC Jimmy from the fire department to the city, allowing the vehicle to be used by all city employees as needed.
